About Us

Mt. Alvernia Preparatory and Kindergarten stands as a beacon of educational excellence in the heart of Montego Bay, St. James. Founded in 1925 by the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, our Catholic institution has been built upon the unwavering foundation of faith and academic excellence, proudly serving the local community for nearly a century. Our comprehensive educational program spans from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 6, offering students a nurturing environment where academic achievement and character development flourish hand in hand. We take immense pride in our rich extra-curricular offerings, which have earned us numerous awards at all levels of Jamaica Cultural Development Commission competitions, showcasing the diverse talents of our students. At Mt. Alvernia, we believe in developing the whole child through our extensive sports programs including football, gymnastics, swimming, and chess, alongside character-building activities through our Cub Scouts, 4H Club, and Brownies groups. Our dedicated staff members, trained in premier primary education enrichment, are committed to incorporating social and emotional learning into every aspect of our students' development. Guided by our motto 'Laboris Sui Praemium Recepit - The Worker Receives the Reward of his Labour,' we continue to uphold our tradition of excellence while preparing our students for future success through comprehensive academic programs and meaningful community engagement.
